As of 2013, Achim Badstuebner leads exterior design at Mercedes-Benz. Prior to this role, Badstuebner had been working at Audi for 13 years as the Head of Audi exterior design. He was considered one of the public faces of Audi’s design department and was responsible for some of the most successful current Audi designs.
As head of Audi exterior design, Badstuebner led the design of the single-frame Nuvolari grille, which was first used on the 2005 A6 sedan and is now a signature styling element across the Audi lineup. As reported in Automotive News, “his team has also given shape to Audi’s new entries in the crossover segment, including the compact Q3.” According to CarDesignNews, some of Badstuebner’s most successful designs include the current Audi A5 and A6, while he was also heavily involved in forward-looking concepts such as the 2011 Urban Concept (‘Neo’) and the all-electric A2 concept. They serve as a stark contrast to the 2013 Sport Quattro concept and the Nanuk quattro concept, which represent a more brutal and aggressive design strategy.
