    Vitra Showroom in Chicago. This fast low-budget installation was commissioned for the Neocon presentation at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart.

    Laurene Leon Boym was born in New York City in 1964. She earned a BFA from School of Visual Arts in 1984, and a MID from Pratt Institute in 1993. Since 1995, she has been a part of Boym Partners Inc. She was the Designer in Residence at Cooper-Hewitt in 1993. In 1993, her work was the subject of the groundbreaking exhibition Mechanical Brides at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

    Laurene was a founder of Association of Women Industrial Designers (AWID) in 1992, co-curating Goddess In the Details in 1995 and running the organization between 1995/97. She has taught at Parsons School of Design and in MFA design program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

    Her studio’s designs include tableware for Alessi and Authentics, watches for Swatch, lighting for Flos, showrooms and retail displays for Vitra, and exhibition installations for many American museum, including Museum of the City of New York and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Objects designed by Boym Partners are included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

    Boym Partners are the winners of the National Design Award in 2009. They have won eight I.D. Magazine Annual Design Awards, including the Best of Category in 2000, and two Federal Design Achievement Awards.

    Vitra Showroom. To bring some warmth and humor into an austere white space, Boym Partners suggested to simply draw the new showroom on the walls, windows and floors of the old one.

    The full effect of Vitra showroom design could only be appreciated in the context of the other Neocon presentations. On the background of serious, self-gratifying and expensive interior, this playful environment too out in every possible respect, thus attracting a lot of customers’ attention.

    Flatware for Gourmet Settings, a Toronto-based company of contemporary flatware. The unusual pattern Hybrids is an intentionally mismatched set, with a masculine knife, feminine spoons and "hermaphrodite" forks. It's supposed to freely mix with any stray flatware one may already have around the kitchen.
